Fiber Optic Light Bars

This simple-to-make accessory will create subtle moody light wash effects on walls and floors. This project is perfect for bathrooms, showers and bedrooms - in fact anywhere in the home.

The components you will need: PVC Conduit or bar to act as fiber support. Buy tubes with an inside diameter just sufficient to hold the number of fibers required for each light point. The photos in this project used 25 fibers per point, contained within a PVC tube.

Measure the conduit and mark the positions of the light points. Cut the required number of lengths of tube. The length of the tube will depend largely on the depth of your conduit. Too long and there won't be room for the fibers to bend. Too short and the fibers will tend to pull out under the tension created by the bend in the fibers. Drill the holes to accept the short lengths of tube. The holes should be sized to fit the outside diameter of the tube. Press the tubes into the holes of the conduit and apply glue to keep it secure.

Divide the fiber optic harness into the required number of smaller bundles and fit these into the tubes. Trim fibers to length.
